How to make it in America

British tech companies looking for wider horizons were at The Ivy this week as FastPay hosted a breakfast briefing discussing the right time to expand your business into the US and what to do when you get there. Featuring a number of industry experts, the panel included Mark Williams, Managing Director, Results International Group, Abeed Janmohamed, Founder and CEO, Volando, Adam Ludwin, Chief Visionary Officer and Co-Founder, Captify, Matt Byrne, UK MD, FastPay, and was chaired by Propeller’s Head of Media and Marketing Ben Titchmarsh.

Advising the audience that they should make sure their home market is stable before setting up in the states, Ludwin shared how an American rival had raised $50 million despite their tech being poor which gave Captify the confidence to take their much more advanced product to the US market. Janmohamed explained the difference in attitude across the pond, stating that whilst British businesses have a ‘no, not unless these things change’ attitude, in America the culture was more inclined to say yes initially and then change things along the way. All panelists agreed you no longer need to set up in New York in order to be successful in the states and Detroit, Chicago and Seattle offer great platforms for investment.
